How to Buy Outlet Furniture Without Sacrificing Quality
A practical buyer's guide to spotting genuine quality in outlet and returns furniture - what to check, what to ask, and why a proper repair process matters more than the condition a piece arrives in.
Five Things to Check Before You Buy Outlet Furniture
Whichever retailer you're buying from, run through this checklist first.
- Find out who repairs the damage, and how. Ask whether repairs are done in-house or outsourced, and whether the paint or fabric used is sourced to match the original; this is the single biggest factor in whether a repaired piece looks genuinely new. Remember some outlets sell “as is’ and it’s therefore up to you to decide whether you are happy to accept a slight flaw or whether you want to spend time or money repairing it post purchase.
- Look at the materials, not just the discount. A steep price cut only means something if the underlying piece is solid wood, proper upholstery, or a recognised brand to begin with. Check the product description for materials and dimensions where they're listed; outlet retailers don't always receive full material specs from the original supplier, so it's worth asking directly if it isn't stated and matters to you.
- Read reviews that mention condition on arrival. General star ratings are useful, but look specifically for reviews that describe how items looked once unpacked; that tells you far more about quality control than the marketing copy does.
- Check delivery, assembly and storage terms upfront. Ask whether items arrive assembled, what packaging protection is used since original boxes aren't always available, and whether the retailer can hold your order if you're not ready for it yet.
- Understand the returns policy before you buy. Outlet stock is still covered by consumer rights, but return windows and conditions vary by retailer; know them before you order, not after.
How We Handle Repairs at Gorgeous Little Things for Home
That first point on the checklist - who repairs the damage, and how - is worth digging into, because it's where outlet retailers really part ways. Ask most sellers what happens between an item arriving damaged and it landing on your doorstep, and the honest answer is very little. For us, it's the whole business.
At Gorgeous Little Things for Home, every single piece that arrives with any damage is fully repaired, with love, in our Leicestershire workshop, using paint sourced from the same suppliers as the original retailer so the finish matches what the piece was designed to look like. That's the difference between us and a lot of the outlet market: it genuinely doesn't matter much what state an item arrives in, because our repair process is built to bring it back to a like-new standard before it ever reaches you. Pieces that don't need any work, can often ship within days; anything requiring repair or a respray can take up to 3 or 4 weeks, because that time goes into getting the finish properly right. On the rare occasion something can't be repaired to that standard, we say so plainly on the product page rather than send it out regardless.
It's also why buying outlet is a genuinely more sustainable way to furnish a home; pieces that would otherwise be written off or sent to landfill get a second chance, at a fraction of the retail price. It's a philosophy that's been at the heart of our family-run business since we started out in 2020, and it's why repair, not just resale, sits right at the centre of what we do.
Questions Worth Asking Before You Buy
These are the questions we get asked most, and the ones worth having answered by any outlet retailer you're considering.
Is it safe to buy furniture that's been a customer return?
Yes, provided the retailer has actually inspected and, where necessary, repaired the item before reselling it. Ask what condition it arrived in and what work (if any) was carried out. A retailer that's upfront about this process is generally one you can trust. Often ‘customer returns’ includes items that are failed deliveries, and even pieces that were too big to fit through a doorway – it’s just a term used for brands to categorise the items we receive.
How long does outlet furniture take to arrive?
It varies by item. Pieces that don't need any work can often ship within a few days; pieces needing repair or a respray typically take longer, up to around four weeks in our case, because that time goes into getting the finish right rather than shipping it out as-is. If you’re collecting your item from our workshop - and it’s available now - we can often have it ready within a week. If you require shipping, it usually depends on our planned shipping routes and it may take a couple of weeks.
Can I see outlet furniture in person before buying?
Where possible, this is worth doing, especially for larger pieces like sofas and wardrobes. Many outlet retailers, including us, run a showroom alongside the website specifically so customers can check finish and condition before committing. You are also very welcome to come and view any piece before it’s been repaired.
Buying With Confidence
The short version: outlet furniture can vary hugely. Decide what matters most to you – is it price, is it a piece that looks like new, is it being able to afford a certain brand would normally be out of your price range? Do your homework by reading reviews, check repair, shipping and returns policies, and whether you can see the item before buying. Do that, and outlet shopping is one of the most sensible ways to furnish a home well without paying full retail price.
